I have participated in a lot of programs aimed at helping men with prostate cancer.
One of the most rewarding is run by the U.S. Department of Defense, which has a large prostate research operation.
And well they should.
DOD isn’t just about the War Machine. Something like 500,000 vets, many Black, have prostate cancer. Some were victims of Agent Orange, the defoliant used in Vietnam that caused prostate cancer and other cancers,
DOD employs many top-flight. So to build bridges with vets and the public the agency began supporting prostate cancer research—as well it should.
Two years ago, I represented MaleCare and analyzed research applications for prostate cancer projects. It was hard, serious work.
Most applications did not relate to active surveillance. But I still had to weigh in on what the value of the research would be.
If you have already been involved in the DOD process, no need to fill out a new application because they keep your applications on file.
If you are a newbie, get an application from Melissa Flathmann directly: melissa.flathmann@gdit.com
Once the following information is received, you will be interviewed by GDIT staff to complete their application process:
1. The E-nomination form, to be completed electronically and sent by the nominee.
2. A current resume to be sent by the nominee.
3. A letter of nomination, from ZERO/Us TOO, describing the nominee’s advocacy work and potential to represent the prostate cancer community’s voice.
Email Terri Likowski at ZERO at terri@zerocancer.org to get a recommendation letter once you have completed your paperwork. She says: Please be sure to send her a brief paragraph on your involvement with your support group and the prostate cancer community that she can reference for your letter.
Important: There is a deadline of MARCH 21, 2022 so please be sure to give Likowsi time to prepare the letter before the due date.
