I used to think women were the targets of medical treatment. Years ago, Robert Mendelsohn, MD, the so-called “medical heretic,” wrote a book called “MalePractice” that told that story.
Swedish gender researcher Ericka Johnson wrote a new book, using feminist analysis, called “A Cultural Biography of the Prostate,” which tells the story of the misunderstood prostate and how men have suffered medical abuse because of their prostates.
She will be speaking to Active Surveillance Patients International at noon Eastern time Feb. 26.

The book covers many aspects of the prostate, including how medical artists didn’t identify the prostate until the 16th Century and how misunderstood the prostate is.
The book doesn’t get into active surveillance but Johnson promises to address the topic in her ASPI program.
