Left out of the discussion is the fact that the preferred antibiotics for TR are fluoroquinolones such as Cipro, which are actually proscribed by the FDA and EMA except for life-threatening cases.

Fluoroquinolones attack collagen in the body and are suspected of causing aorta aneurysms, torn Achilles tendons, and retinal detachments.

See e.g. https://www.fda.gov/news-events/fda-brief/fda-brief-fda-warns-fluoroquinolone-antibiotics-can-cause-aortic-aneurysm-certain-patients#:~:text=%E2%80%9CFDA%20is%20committed%20to%20protecting,and%20benefits%20of%20certain%20drugs.

Thanks. The risks of overuse of antibiotics were covered by Dr. George. But worth mentioning again.

Hi Howard!

Great reporting and moderating the debate! I believe you meant to type in the second argument by Dr. Kaye that TP is more costly, not TR.

Substantively I didn’t think the Porsche Honda analogy that Dr. Kaye made was a good one. A Porsche costs more arguably because it is a much better vehicle. She should have used an analogy where two things are just as good but one costs more, like filling up a tank of unleaded regular gas at Mobil for $3.99 a gallon (TR) or at Shell for $4.59 a gallon (TP) when the gas stations are next to each other.

Carry on!

Best regards,

Readers pointed out a couple typos I made in my rush, switching TP for transrectal. So transrectal is considered "malpractice." I fixed them,. Sorry.
